How might we advance digital inclusion and 21st-century tech skills for all to succeed in the innovation economy?
While nearly 80% of middle-skill jobs require basic digital proficiency, 1 in 6 Americans are unable to use email or other basic online tools. Last year, 500,000 computing jobs were open nationwide, yet we produced less than 43,000 computer science graduates. This digital divide produces an economic disadvantage, with positions requiring mid-to-high digital skills offering, on average, $43 - $73K in annual salary, compared to $30K for low digital skill roles.
The Spring 2018 Civic Accelerator - a 10-week entrepreneur boot camp and investment fund - will accelerate 10-15 innovative, scalable ventures that bridge the digital divide and fill the growing digital talent pipeline through:
Developing tech capabilities among k-12 students to prepare for tomorrow’s workplace
Increasing employability and access to high-wage opportunities for working adults across gender, race, class and geographies
Technical upskilling, on-site education and credentialing in industries undergoing digitization
Affordable, equitable access to digital products and services for marginalized populations
Expert mentors, coaches, and guest speakers
Average increase in earned revenue within 1 year of acceleration
Of Founders report a significant increase in startup skills and network development
